Rendered Speculation: Ferrari 458XX developmental track-car
Ferrari has stumbled upon one heck of a formula with its XX development programs. They've found that their most wealthy clients aren't just willing to help Maranello develop new components for future supercars, they're actually willing to pay for the privilege. And pay big, too – as in $2 million big. The program started with the Enzo-based FXX, evolved with the FXX Evoluzione, and carries on with the Fiorano-based 599XX. So what's next up Ferrari's sleeve? A 458XX wouldn't be too far off the mark. If the outgoing lineup (and ... Read more →
LA 2009: Toyota and Billabong craft one funky Venza Frank Filipponio
No, this isn't a leftover post from SEMA, although to be perfectly fair, it is a leftover vehicle from SEMA. While reporting on the Hot Rod Toyota Tundra and Tacoma All-Terrain Gamer, we somehow ...

LA 2009: Luna and Toby model the 2010 Honda Element Dog Friendly package Frank Filipponio

LA 2009: Mini owns its inner Bulldog 3 days ago on Autoblog
Mini may be many things, but stuffy they're not. When your business consists of selling tiny hatchbacks with sports car handling at a near luxury price, you really can't take yourself too seriously all the time. Mini ad campaigns have capitalized on that cheeky spirit to great effect. While at ...
The Amatoya: Meet the next generation of fire fighting vehicles 5 days ago on Autoblog
Designer Liam Ferguson's vision of how to fight fires almost makes us wish we were firemen – as long as we could have the keys to one of these. The Amatoya is a site recon and light tanker vehicle designed with a philosophy much more military than civilian. The seating position is like ...
Essen 2009: 1,050-hp 1956 Mercedes Gullwing drag car 5 days ago on Autoblog
This ungainly little creature had an area all to itself at this year's Essen Motor Show. Built over four years by Swiss drag racer Stefan Winter – who is a roofer by trade – the most important thing to say is this: Winter did not mangle a genuine 1956 Mercedes 300 SL to create this ...

Our sleuthing colleagues over at The Truth About Cars have dissected electric car maker Zap's latest 10-Q filing, and they unearthed the following little tidbit: "The decrease of $1.5 million (in revenue) is primarily due to the phase out of our three wheeled Xebra vehicle with reduced selling ...
Bentley does a double-decker bus for charity 6 days ago on Autoblog
We haven't met anyone who works in the Bentley factory. (At least, this writer hasn't.) But we like them already. Because while workers at other assembly plants go on strike or to Eminem concerts when they've got no more work, the crew from Crewe puts their energy and considerable talents into ...

A few months ago, the internet started to rumble with rumors of a race car being built out of the incredible Pininfarina Ferrari 612 P4/5 that James Glickenhaus had commissioned at a staggering (but understandable) $4 million. A thread on Ferrari superforum FerrariChat.com put those rumors to ...

Think you've seen the most hardcore 500 already? Sure, Abarth has churned out some pretty wicked versions of the retro-hatch, but even the 695 Tributo Ferrari and R3T rally machine can't hold a candle to the beast above. Given the name, you might think this latest Cinquecento was the result ...
Snow Drift: Dacia Duster debuts for Trophée Andros with Alain Prost 18 days ago on Autoblog
Let's set one thing straight here. The retirement of a leading Formula One driver is often portrayed as some sort of tragedy – for the driver himself especially. But the truth of the matter is that for a former World Champion, the world is his oyster. Retired F1 drivers can go on to ...

We're not precisely sure how to treat this one, so we're going to go ahead and use the "jump in with both feet" method. TLC is launching a new reality show called Family Armor that follows the exploits of two Mormon brothers-in-law that build bulletproof cars for a living. That doesn't sounds so ...

Atom Smasher: UK-bound Ariel V8 to command $200,000? 26 days ago on Autoblog
Two hundred thousand bucks is a house in most places. Well, that's £120,000 to our British friends. Still, that's an awful lot of scratch. How much is it compared to other cars? If say you wanted a Porsche Cayman S -- a car many consider the finest sports car in the world -- the ...
SEMA 2009 Worst of Show: This car stinks... 27 days ago on Autoblog
Stinks. You might think that we're talking about the overall design of this shockingly orange scissor-door/scissor-trunk Dodge Charger R/T. Or the build quality, what with panel gaps that you can insert your index finger into, wheels so large the tie-rods can't hold them and the world's saddest ...
The Tony Fox "Proud American" and "Bonneville Boss" Rocket Truck 27 days ago on Autoblog

Visions of rocket-powered pickups and semis running the quarter mile immediately came to mind. Did some ...
SEMA 2009: What we didn't get to cover 29 days ago on Autoblog
Every year at SEMA, we fill the week with posts featuring special vehicles and products that we felt were important enough to share. SEMA 2009: Knee-high tri-axle pickup by Air-Zenith is down and (not so) dirty 1 month ago on Autoblog
We're not exactly sure what this used to be in its former life, but it all kinds of cool in its current iteration. Just knee-high to a Hobbit, this six-wheel convertible was parked in the shadow of Bigfoot and we almost tripped over it. We were able to locate an Air-Zenith banner on the ...
SEMA 2009: Hummer quartet is a pretty sweet swansong 1 month ago on Autoblog

SEMA 2009: Inside-out Toyota Alphard is the ultimate brougham 1 month ago on Autoblog
Most Americans know very little of the Toyota Alphard and its Vellfire offshoot. It's basically one of Toyota's JDM minivans, although it's also frequently used as a limousine too. It's kind of funky and cool in a totally Japanese way. While we've gotten the moderately cool Previa in the States, ...
SEMA 2009: WD-40 Camaro looks cool, needs more stickers 1 month ago on Autoblog
With a 600-horsepower, 6.2-liter V8 residing underhood, we'd happily spray ourselves into the seats of this WD-40 showcar. The legendary lubricant company actually contracted a slew of top-shelf builders to do the custom outfitting, they just sponsored it. Either way, this blue-and-yellow 2010 ...

SEMA 2009: Toyota Tacoma All-Terrain Gamer (ATG) takes gaming to illogical conclusions 1 month ago on Autoblog

SEMA 2009: Toyota Tundra Hot Rod kinda cool misses the bullseye 1 month ago on Autoblog
Yeah... Toyota is painting this one as a what-would-happen if Tundras existed back during the hot rodding heyday of the 1950s. We'll let you draw your own conclusions about that. However, we would like to take this opportunity to point out that the grill would have been chrome, not matte. And ...
SEMA 2009: 427-powered Fiat 500 is the stuff dreams are made of 1 month ago on Autoblog
Okay, this is so awesome it hurts. The guys at Legacy Innovations took a perfectly lovely but woefully underpowered 1959 Fiat 500 and turned it into a Fiat 7,000. The Fiat 500 is an iconic car, one with tremendous nostalgic charm, but it was never really much good as a car until they redid it a ...
SEMA 2009: Who lives in an Impala, under the sea? 1 month ago on Autoblog

SEMA 2009: Brandon Leung's Scion xB channels Bonneville circa 1955 1 month ago on Autoblog
When we look at a Scion xB we tend to think of a lot of things, few of which are very flattering. One thing we definitely don't think of is a Bonneville Salt Flats bike hauler from the '50s, until now. That's probably why we're bloggers and not designers. Fortunately for us there is Brandon ...
